Earthquake tremors shake Delhi-NCR, epicenter traced to Afghanistan

Delhi and its surrounding areas, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram, experienced tremors on Thursday afternoon as a significant earthquake struck with its epicenter in Afghanistan. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake measured a magnitude of 6.1 and occurred at 2:50 pm IST, with its epicenter located in Afghanistan.

The tremors were also felt in Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, and other parts of northern India, causing panic and prompting people to evacuate buildings. Fortunately, as of now, no reports of loss of lives or property have emerged.

The earthquake's impact extended beyond India, reaching cities in Pakistan, including Lahore, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in parts of Pakistan at 2:20 pm, with the epicenter in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at 6.4 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 206.6 km, striking 44 km SSW of Jurm in Afghanistan. The seismic event triggered panic among residents in Delhi and the National Capital Region, leading to reports of people rushing out of their homes and workplaces. The situation is under continuous monitoring, with authorities assessing the impact and ensuring public safety.
